Innerspring Baby Mattress Buying Tips
Did you know that the best innerspring baby mattress will always have:
- more layers of support than lower quality mattresses
- these layers will be of higher quality than other mattresses

Let’s talk about coil count and coil gauge! Coil count – refers to the # of springs or steel coils inside the mattress
coil gauge – refers to the thickness of the steel coils and ranges between 12.5 and 19. Where 12.5 is the thickest gauge and 19 the thinnest.
So What Are We Looking For? - We want a fairly high coil count! (135-150 is a good range)
- We want the coil thickness or gauge to be 15.5 or lower
One of my favorite mattresses contains 150 coils. Just please don't settle for a really cheap one that contains 88 coils or something like that. Tip:Please keep in mind that a 160 coil baby crib mattress with a thicker steel gauge can be firmer than a 280 coil baby crib mattress made of thinner steel.
Watch Out For The Sales Pitch! I encountered a sales associate that tried to convince me to purchase a crib mattress that contained over 280 coils. Fortunately, at that point I knew that super high coil count was not a benefit if the coils were not thick enough. Instead I chose a mattress with less but thicker coils.
Make Sure The Mattress Has A Good Insulator Pad Do not buy innerspring mattresses that don’t have border rods
Border rods provide: - extra firmness
- durability
- edge support
If you choose a crib mattress that does not have border rods, it will sag if your baby stands or walks near the edge. One of my favorite baby sites is Unique Baby Gear Ideas, I recommend checking it out when you get a chance. I also found a great place that contains informative mattress reviews of some of the best rated adult mattress brands.
