Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Unfortunately, sudden infant death syndrome cannot be completely eliminated. However, I believe that all expecting parents should be informed on how to reduce the risks or chances of it happening to their baby.
Below are some recommendations I found repeatedly in the literature that decrease the risks of SIDS:
- placing baby on his/her back during sleep - experts say this will prevent your baby from smothering themselves or breathing in exhaled air due to lack of head control
- breastfeeding has been associated with a large reduction as published in Pediatrics and other journals
- a smoke (nicotine) free environment for the baby
- using only a firm baby crib mattress with baby crib sheets that fit snugly on the crib mattress
- use of sleeping sacks as recommended by the European Journal of Pediatrics
- the use of a fan to circulate air has also shown to reduce the risk of SIDS
- not using bumper pads in your baby’s crib
I follow all of the above recommendations with my precious baby Samantha. It’s the least I can do to keep her safe inside her crib.
