Baby Crib Safety - Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some baby crib safety FAQs:
Question 1: What are the hazards that I should know about?
Your crib mattress size is very important for your baby’s safety and should be the standard size. This will result in a tight fit and your baby will not get stuck between the side of the crib and edge of the crib mattress.
The mattress height(based on crib mattress supports) is another important factor that you must consider. The base of your crib should be adjustable to several levels or heights. Make sure it is at the lowest height once your baby is moving around more. This will prevent any chance of climbing out.
Question 2: How do I know when my baby is ready for a normal bed?
One indicator that your toddler should not be sleeping in the crib anymore is when he/she is climbing out. Another good test is to see if your toddler is taller than the sidebar when the crib base is adjusted to the lowest height. If this is the case, then the crib is not safe anymore.
Question 3: Are bumper pads safe?
They can be safe if they are properly secured. They should be right next to the edge of the mattress. I personally do not recommend the use of bumper pads. It is believed that they are also a contributing factor in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). details
Question 4: Are crib blankets safe?
They are safe if you do the following:
- tuck the blanket around the bottom of the mattress
- do not place it higher than your baby’s chest
- make sure you little one’s feet are at the foot of the bed
Baby crib safety is extremely important and it should always be evolving and improving. New parents must be aware of all the possible dangers that are just around the corner.
